What are the Project X Knives from Hinderer Knives?

The Hinderer Project X EDC folding knife is very rare and hard to find for sale. The Hinderer Project X is ideal for any situation and contains a variety of new features while still showcasing the award-winning Hinderer pedigree. The clip point blade design gives it the ability to have a high grind, making it suitable for cutting. With a blade thickness of .165, it’s durable yet light in weight. The handle is ergonomically designed, taking into account the idea that a knife should be easy to use.

When you hold the Hinderer Project X knife, it fits snugly and securely, with enough texture on both sides of the handle to prevent slipping, while the flipper/guard keeps your hand away from the blade. The solidly-built pivot allows for the most intense work and the Triway pivot system is also present, as well as the Hinderer Lockbar Stabilizer. Additionally, there is a patented Hinderer Modular Backspacer System which makes it easy to take apart the entire knife for cleaning or adding additional accessories.

The Hinderer Project X is an extremely adjustable pocket knife that is suitable for any situation! It has a great many new features and still preserves the acclaimed Hinderer history. The clip point design and considerable width of the knife offer a great high grind that allows for great cutting power. Additionally, the ideal thickness of .165 makes it tough, yet not too heavy.

As is always the case with RHK folders, the Hinderer Project X‘s ergonomics are well taken care of, and the same is true with the Project X; however, its overall shape is something that we haven’t seen before in the Hinderer collection. Perhaps it’s the clip blade that has us thinking like this, but the handle profile looks a bit like what you could find on a Bowie fixed blade, with a low arc between the guard and the mild butt end beak. The oversized front-and-back end screws make the otherwise plain front scale look attractive and give the Hinderer Project X an attractive visual symmetry; the titanium locking side is textured and equipped with both a steel lock bar interface and the Hinderer overtravel stop.

To create Damasteel, a stainless steel liquid is firstly poured into a vertical tower. As the fluid passes through the spout, a gush of non-reactive gas breaks it into tiny drops. These drops become powder when they reach the bottom of the tower, containing all the alloying elements of the melt. The powder is then collected in a carbon steel bucket beneath the tower. After this, a cold compaction press is used to allow for the succeeding high-pressure, high-temperature process. This will output a solid hunk of steel that already has an ideal construction. In comparison, conventionally made steel would be a rough hunk of metal at this stage of the process, needing further forming or rolling to become a suitable piece of steel.

At one point, it was mistakenly thought that Damascus blades, with their distinctive surface patterns, were created through the process of pattern welding, which is the joining of several different pieces of metal into one. Now, the contrast between wootz steel, which Damascus blades are actually made of, and pattern welding is completely understood. This misunderstanding about the two types of steel was corrected in 1973 when William F. Moran presented his “Damascus knives” at the Knifemakers’ Guild Show.

To create a modern version of Damascus steel, several layers of iron and steel are welded together. Although this is technically incorrect, the term “Damascus” is widely used in the trade to refer to these pattern-welded steel blades. The patterns of the blade depend on how the smith works the billet, which is stretched and folded until the required layers are achieved. In order to be recognized as a Master Smith by the American Bladesmith Society, founded by Moran, the smith must produce a Damascus blade with a minimum of 300 layers.
